There's a delightful new shop that's opened on Steung Thmey Road in Siem Reap town. It's called Mitri after the bright yellow flower. Inside are all the textile treasures to be found around Southeast Asia. First of all there's a wide selection of Khmer silks. For a visitor to Mitri guest house, a purchase of locally handwoven silk will give lasting pleasure when made into a dress, shirt or suit. Mitri offers one, two and four ply silk at prices lower than the competition as they buy in bulk to supply other stores on the island. Mitri also has mudmee silks from the all provinces around Cambodia distinctive by their patterns. A sarong of two yards retails between 50,000 and 80,000 Riels and is a distinctive addition to any collection of textiles. The shop also has the largest selection of handwoven cottons from around Thailand which are perfect for either clothing, curtains, bed covers and other household accessories. "We've searched around Southeast Asia and selected the most interesting textiles from every region," comments Khun Daeng, "we have mixed silks that can be machine washed, drip dried and do not wrinkle. Perfect for traveling. And we have rayon shirts and dresses from Indonesia and hand embroidery from the tribes in the northern mountains. At Mitri we have it all." |
